Two learners want to call the team "The Dragons". Two others are set on "The Tigers". Nobody will budge, the task has stalled, and you have four other groups waiting for your attention. It's a small moment, but it repeats itself constantly in cooperative learning classrooms — over team names, whose idea to use first, which colour to paint the poster, who reads the instructions aloud. For EFL and ESL teachers running group and pair work in particular, these disputes can eat into precious target-language practice time if there's no quick, structured way to move past them.
These micro-disputes matter more than they look. Left unmanaged, they eat into task time and can sour the group dynamic for the rest of the lesson. Handled well, they become genuine opportunities to practise skills students will use for the rest of their lives — and, for language learners, genuine opportunities to negotiate meaning and practise functional language in a real, motivating context. Research backs this up directly: students who receive explicit training in conflict resolution show higher academic achievement than peers who don't, and structured cooperative learning contexts are one of the most consistently effective ways to deliver that training (Johnson, Johnson, Dudley & Magnuson, 1995; Johnson & Johnson, 2009). Left to their own devices, young learners tend to fall back on a narrow set of responses — repeating themselves louder, appealing to the teacher, or simply giving up and withdrawing (Johnson, Johnson, Dudley & Magnuson, 1995). None of those actually resolve anything. What follows are quick, classroom-tested strategies to teach students to compromise — most drawn directly from cooperative learning research — that give students something better to do instead.

1. Fist to Five: gauge agreement in seconds
Before assuming a full-blown standoff, it's worth checking whether one actually exists. Fist to Five is a simple voting gesture: students hold up a closed fist for "no way" through five fingers for "fully on board," with everything in between representing a shade of agreement (Keeley & Tobey, 2011). Originally developed for gauging consensus in meetings, it has been widely adopted in classrooms as a fast way to check where a group actually stands before spending time debating.
How to use it for a team-name dispute: once both names are on the table, have all four students vote with fingers simultaneously. If it's 3 fingers versus 2, you likely have a workable majority preference rather than a true deadlock — worth naming out loud before moving to a heavier strategy.
Why it works: it replaces a binary "who's louder" dynamic with a visible, quick read of the whole group's feeling, and it surfaces the students who are lukewarm rather than firmly opposed — exactly the students most likely to compromise with a nudge.
2. Agreement Circles: physically sort the group
Agreement Circles, a Kagan structure, ask students to physically position themselves — near a name, statement, or option — to represent how they feel, then explain their reasoning to whoever else has landed nearby (Kagan & Kagan, 2009). For a younger class split over "Dragons" versus "Tigers," this could be as simple as designating two ends of a table for the two names, having pairs physically stand there, and requiring each pair to give a one-sentence reason before anyone changes sides.
Why it works for young learners especially: movement and physical grouping make an abstract disagreement concrete and visible, which is particularly useful with learners who find it hard to argue a position verbally on the spot.
3. Placemat Consensus: get every voice down before deciding
Placemat Consensus is a Kagan structure built specifically for reaching a shared decision while making sure every group member's input is genuinely considered rather than the loudest voice winning by default (Kagan & Kagan, 2009). Each student writes their own idea in their own section of a shared sheet (the "placemat"), then the group discusses all the ideas and writes an agreed answer in the centre.
Adapted for a quick dispute: give each of the four students ten seconds to write (or say) one reason their preferred name is a good one. Only after all four reasons are heard does the group vote or discuss further. This single step — hearing everyone before deciding — measurably reduces the "two loudest students decide for the group" pattern that derails cooperative tasks.

4. Mini Constructive Controversy: for genuine 50/50 splits
When a class is evenly and firmly divided — not a quick vote away from resolving — a scaled-down version of Constructive Controversy (also called Structured Academic Controversy) gives structure to the disagreement itself rather than trying to shortcut past it. In the full version, developed and extensively researched by David and Roger Johnson, pairs are assigned a position to argue, present their best case, then swap positions to argue the other side, before working together to build a synthesis both sides can accept (Johnson & Johnson, 2009). Studies applying this structure consistently find it produces higher-quality decisions than simply pushing a group toward quick agreement, because it forces genuine consideration of the alternative rather than premature convergence (Johnson & Johnson, 2009).
A stripped-down classroom version: the "Dragons" pair has thirty seconds to argue for "Tigers," and vice versa. Then, still in role, they have to name one thing about the opposing name they now understand better. Finally, the group tries to agree — sometimes landing on the original names, sometimes on a genuine third option ("Fire Tigers") that neither side proposed alone.
Why it works: it interrupts the instinct to defend a position reflexively and replaces it with a structured reason to actually engage with the other side's thinking — the mechanism that research ties to better outcomes, not just faster ones.
5. Talking Chips: slow down a heated exchange
When a dispute has tipped from disagreement into frustration, the barrier often isn't lack of ideas — it's one or two students dominating the exchange. Talking Chips is a Kagan structure that makes turn-taking physical: each student gets a set number of chips (or counters), and must place one down every time they speak. Once a student is out of chips, they can't speak again until everyone else has used at least one (Kagan & Kagan, 2009).
Why it helps disputes specifically: it mechanically prevents the two most vocal students from talking over the two quieter ones, which often changes the outcome of the "vote" simply by making sure all four opinions are actually heard.

6. The fair fallback: simple, transparent tie-breakers
Sometimes, after genuine discussion, a group is still stuck. That's fine. Not every disagreement needs to be resolved through talking and debate. What matters most for young learners isn't finding the cleverest solution - it's finding the one that feels fair.
And this isn't just classroom folklore. Research backs it up directly. Preschoolers who watched a resource divided through a visibly fair procedure (like a spinning wheel giving everyone an equal chance) rarely objected, even when the outcome wasn't the one they wanted. However, the same unequal outcome produced far more complaints when the underlying procedure was rigged (Grocke, Rossano & Tomasello, 2015).
And related work confirms that young children develop a genuine preference for procedurally fair processes over simply getting an equal share. That they judge the fairness of the process somewhat independently of whether they personally end up happy with the result (Shaw & Olson, 2012). In other words, students are far more willing to accept "we lost the vote" when they see they lost if fair-and-square. So, with that in mind, below are a few simple, low-prep methods you can use in a stale-mate:

The key classroom rule: only reach for one of these after a genuine attempt at compromise (steps 1–5 above), and let the students themselves choose which method to use. A tie-breaker deployed too early teaches students that discussion is pointless; used as a last resort after real conversation, it teaches them that some decisions genuinely come down to chance — and that a fair process is something worth accepting even when you don't like the outcome.
Bringing it together
None of these strategies require special materials or extra lesson time — most take under two minutes once students are familiar with the routine. The pattern worth teaching, across all of them, is the same: check where the group actually stands (Fist to Five, Agreement Circles), make sure every voice is heard before anyone decides (Placemat Consensus, Talking Chips), genuinely engage with the other side when the split is real (Constructive Controversy), and fall back on visible fairness only once real discussion has been tried. Teach that sequence explicitly a few times, and most team-name standoffs start resolving themselves before you even reach the group.
